Economics
The department's professors specialize in a wide range of fields (international trade, industrial economics, monetary and financial economics, information theory, etc.), with a constant focus on the major economic challenges facing the world today (new trends in international trade, climate change issues, analysis of digital markets, impact of inflation, evolution of the healthcare systems, etc.).
The teaching of economics at ESSEC Business School is part of a long tradition that goes back to the institution's founding in 1907. With 20 professors (in Cergy and Singapore) actively involved in research, the Economics Department offers a wide range of courses, the quality of which is measured by the school's international accreditations.
As key players in the scientific community, our faculty also put their expertise at the service of society. They are active in many institutions such as the Singapore Parliament, the French Competition Authority, the Financial Markets Authority, and the OECD, as well as through their participation in public policy discussions. International Trade, Industrial Economics, Monetary and Financial Economics, Information Theory - the areas of expertise of the department's professors are wide ranging. Their teaching is based on a constant commitment to questioning the major economic challenges in today's context (evolution of international trade, climate change, analysis of digital markets, impact of inflation, evolution of health systems, etc.). The research and training opportunities provided by the department reflect the importance given to these issues. Members of the department thus contribute to the understanding, for our students as well as for society as a whole, of the most pressing contemporary economic issues.
The Economics Department focuses on innovative studies with a high societal and organizational impact based on the most recent methodological developments. The department's research is centered around two major themes:
Economics Department faculty members publish their work in scholarly journals such as Economic Journal, Games and Economic Behavior, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Management Science, Quarterly journal of Economics, Rand Journal of Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, etc.
They regularly participate in major international conferences and organize specialized conferences and seminars at ESSEC.
Economics Department professors are also affiliated with the Center for Research in Applied Microeconomics ThEMA (UMR 8184 CNRS - UCP). In addition to its geographical proximity, the Economics Department shares common interests with ThEMA researchers, notably in industrial economics, applied game theory, labor market analysis, international economics and monetary and banking economics. ThEMA and the Economics Department jointly organize the weekly seminar in Economic Analysis, Econometrics, Finance (AEEF).
ESSEC's Economics Department is a leading partner of the Labex MME-DII and actively contributes to its research program by organizing conferences and seminars and by implementing research projects. The department is also active within the Paris-Seine ISITE.
The ESSEC PhD economics track, developed in partnership with CY Cergy Paris University, admits three to four new PhD students every year. Alumni of the doctoral/ PhD program go on to careers as research professors in France and internationally, with excellent job placements (e.g. Bocconi, Trinity College, University College Dublin, Bank of Israel, etc).
In keeping with ESSEC's long-standing tradition, founded as the École Supérieure de Sciences Économiques et Commerciales, the department continues its mission to provide students and continuing education participants with a solid foundation of knowledge in economics.
The Economics Department is involved in all of ESSEC's programs through introductory courses in macroeconomics and microeconomics. Master's students take a foundation course in managerial economics that provides them with advanced knowledge in industrial organization, market analysis and corporate strategies.
The department also offers master's students optional advanced courses in more applied areas of specialization or that promote understanding of major societal issues: international economics, digital economics, banking economics, environmental economics, labor economics, growth economics, health economics, business analysis, game theory, etc.
For the Master in Management, the economics track is structured around a series of classes in economics and related disciplines such as econometrics.
Each year this track attracts students who are motivated by a career in economics research or who are planning to take up positions in economic administration or international organizations. These students have the opportunity to work with departmental faculty on research projects and have priority for class assistantships.
